How to make your rent count toward your credit

Updated

This guide is general information about building credit, not financial advice or credit repair for your situation.

You pay rent on time every month and get no credit for it. Rent reporting changes that: it turns the biggest payment you make into credit history. Here's how it works, and what to watch for.

Does rent count toward your credit?

Usually not. Unlike a card or a car loan, your landlord almost never reports your rent payments to the bureaus. So you can pay on time for years and have no credit to show. Rent reporting fills that gap: a service verifies your payments and reports them for you.

How rent reporting works

You enroll, the service confirms your rent (for example, by connecting your bank read-only to see the payments, or through your landlord's confirmation), and each month it reports that history to the credit bureaus. Over time, those on-time payments build your history, just like a card used responsibly would.

Does my landlord have to participate?

Not necessarily. The best services let you report your own rent even if your landlord doesn't use any platform — you declare your lease and it's verified against your bank payments. That matters if you rent from an individual owner who won't sign up for anything. Fía Crédito works this way: your landlord doesn't have to do anything.

Do I need a Social Security number?

No. Rent can be reported using your legal name, date of birth, and address. An SSN helps match the report but isn't required — which makes rent reporting one of the most accessible ways to build credit if you don't have a Social Security number.

Can this hurt my credit?

A payment made within the month counts as on-time — being a few days late won't hurt you; only a payment that genuinely isn't made is reported as negative, like any credit account. That's why reporting is optional and you can cancel anytime. Pick a service that explains this clearly and lets you cancel at no cost.

What to look for in a service

Check three things: which bureaus it reports to (more is better), whether you can cancel anytime, and whether it works without your landlord participating. Be wary of anyone promising to “raise your score” by an exact amount or charging up front to “repair” credit — that's something else, and often a scam.

How to start with Fía Crédito

Fía Crédito is built to report your rent to Experian, in Spanish, and it works without a Social Security number and without your landlord participating. Enrollment is free during the pilot. You can sign up today to hold your place; we'll let you know as soon as reporting is live. In the meantime, pull your free report at annualcreditreport.com to see where you stand.
