What the neighborhood is like

The heart of Silver City is National Avenue, known as the Silver City International District: bakeries, taquerías, Southeast Asian restaurants, and family businesses that have been there for decades. Off that avenue it's a working, mostly residential neighborhood of two- and four-unit houses — the classic Milwaukee duplex — on tree-lined streets.

Most units belong to small landlords rather than large companies: people who own two or three houses in the neighborhood. That usually means dealing directly with the owner and more flexibility, but also less paperwork — so it's worth getting the deposit, who pays utilities, and the pet rules in writing before you sign. Getting around

National Avenue is a main bus corridor into downtown, and being close to I-94 and the Menomonee Valley makes for a short commute to valley and downtown jobs. Three Bridges Park and the valley trails are just to the north.

For families

It's a neighborhood with many young families and services in Spanish — schools, clinics, and community organizations that work in both languages. Layton Boulevard West Neighbors runs housing programs directly in this area.
